Central propulsion for all Clan Tho'ra vehicles

The Fusion Drive is the complete, integrated propulsion subsystem used in Clan Tho'ra vehicles. It combines power generation (Fusion Cells), energy conversion, thrust generation (Fusion Thrusters), vectoring, and control electronics into a single major assembly.

The Fusion Drive is not a single design but a family of assemblies that evolve through the Tho'ra technology ladder:

Variant Architecture

Flash Hydrogen Fusion Drive (Gen-1)

Primary vehicle: Hydro Speeder

Power chain: Failed to parse (Conversion error. Server ("https://wikimedia.org/api/rest_") reported: "Cannot get mml. Server problem."): {\displaystyle {\text{NaBH}}_{4}\xrightarrow {{\text{H}}_{2}{\text{O}}} {\text{H}}_{2}\xrightarrow {\text{PEM}} {\text{e}}^{-}\xrightarrow {\text{motor}} {\text{impeller}}\xrightarrow {\text{water-jet}} {\text{thrust}}}

  • Power source: Flash Hydrogen Fuel Cells (600–1,200 W per module)
  • Thrust mechanism: Axial-flow water-jet impeller (Hamilton-type)
  • Net thrust:
  • Propulsive efficiency: Failed to parse (Conversion error. Server ("https://wikimedia.org/api/rest_") reported: "Cannot get mml. Server problem."): {\displaystyle \eta _{p}={\frac {2}{1+v_{j}/v_{s}}}\approx 72\%{\text{ at }}v_{j}/v_{s}=1.5}

Micro Fusion Drive (Gen-2)

Primary vehicle: Magneto Speeder

Power chain: Failed to parse (SVG (MathML can be enabled via browser plugin): Invalid response ("Math extension cannot connect to Restbase.") from server "https://wikimedia.org/api/rest_v1/":): {\displaystyle \text{D-T plasma} \xrightarrow{\text{fusion}} \text{14 MeV } n + \alpha \xrightarrow{\text{blanket}} \text{heat} \xrightarrow{\text{MHD}} \text{thrust}}

or (aneutronic mode): Failed to parse (SVG (MathML can be enabled via browser plugin): Invalid response ("Math extension cannot connect to Restbase.") from server "https://wikimedia.org/api/rest_v1/":): {\displaystyle p + {}^{11}\text{B} \rightarrow 3\alpha \xrightarrow{\text{direct conv.}} \text{e}^- \xrightarrow{\text{MHD}} \text{thrust}}

  • Power source: Micro Fusion Fuel Cells (5–50 kW)
  • Thrust mechanism: Magnetohydrodynamic acceleration of ionized air
  • MHD thrust equation:

Failed to parse (SVG (MathML can be enabled via browser plugin): Invalid response ("Math extension cannot connect to Restbase.") from server "https://wikimedia.org/api/rest_v1/":): {\displaystyle F_{\text{MHD}} = \int_V (\mathbf{J} \times \mathbf{B})\,dV = \sigma(\mathbf{E} + \mathbf{v} \times \mathbf{B}) \times \mathbf{B} \cdot V}

  • Atmospheric thrust: ~5–15 kN (dependent on ionization level and B-field)
  • Specific impulse: ~3,000–8,000 s (MHD in ionized air)

Turbo Fusion Drive

Adds an exhaust-driven turbocompressor to the Micro Fusion Drive for sustained high-load cruising. The turbine extracts energy from the MHD exhaust to pre-compress intake air:

Failed to parse (SVG (MathML can be enabled via browser plugin): Invalid response ("Math extension cannot connect to Restbase.") from server "https://wikimedia.org/api/rest_v1/":): {\displaystyle P_{\text{comp}} = \dot{m}_{\text{air}} \cdot c_p \cdot T_1 \cdot \left[\left(\frac{p_2}{p_1}\right)^{(\gamma-1)/\gamma} - 1\right] / \eta_c}

This increases effective thrust by 30–50% during cruise by densifying the working fluid before MHD acceleration.

Super Fusion Drive

Replaces the exhaust-driven turbine with a mechanically driven supercharger powered directly from the fusion reactor's electrical output. Provides instant power surges without exhaust-temperature spool-up delay:

Failed to parse (SVG (MathML can be enabled via browser plugin): Invalid response ("Math extension cannot connect to Restbase.") from server "https://wikimedia.org/api/rest_v1/":): {\displaystyle P_{\text{boost}} = \frac{\dot{m}_{\text{air}} \cdot \Delta p}{\rho \cdot \eta_s}}

Adds ~50–100% thrust above baseline Micro Fusion Drive for emergency acceleration and combat maneuvers.

Hybrid Fusion Drive

Transitional variant combining Flash H₂ and Micro Fusion systems:

  • Flash H₂: Cold-start, low-load operations, emergency backup
  • Micro Fusion: Sustained high-power flight after warm-up
  • Crossover logic: Automatic switchover when fusion cell reaches operating temperature (~10–30 seconds)

Thrust Vectoring

All Fusion Drive variants use gimbal-mounted thrust nozzles with 3-axis control:

Failed to parse (SVG (MathML can be enabled via browser plugin): Invalid response ("Math extension cannot connect to Restbase.") from server "https://wikimedia.org/api/rest_v1/":): {\displaystyle \vec{F}_{\text{net}} = \sum_{i=1}^{n} T_i \cdot \hat{n}_i(\theta_i, \phi_i)}

where Failed to parse (SVG (MathML can be enabled via browser plugin): Invalid response ("Math extension cannot connect to Restbase.") from server "https://wikimedia.org/api/rest_v1/":): {\displaystyle T_i} is individual thruster force and Failed to parse (SVG (MathML can be enabled via browser plugin): Invalid response ("Math extension cannot connect to Restbase.") from server "https://wikimedia.org/api/rest_v1/":): {\displaystyle \hat{n}_i(\theta_i, \phi_i)} is the unit vector determined by gimbal angles. The Magneto Speeder uses 4 independent MHD nozzles for full 6-DOF control.

Integration with Vehicle Systems

  • Power bus: DC (Hydro: 24V/48V) or AC (Magneto: 400V 3-phase)
  • Control interface: Starcom/Navcom + Ra (PsiSys) for mission-aware throttling
  • Cooling: Seawater heat exchanger (Hydro) or liquid-metal radiative loop (Magneto)
  • Structural: Central mounting cradle with vibration isolation and quick-disconnect for field overhaul
