Nuclear Fusion is the process of combining light atomic nuclei — typically hydrogen isotopes — to form heavier nuclei, releasing enormous energy. It is the fundamental reaction that powers stars and is the scientific foundation beneath the entire Fusion Tech technology family.

The Science

When two light nuclei overcome their electromagnetic repulsion (the Coulomb barrier) and merge:

  • The resulting nucleus has slightly less mass than the two original nuclei combined
  • The "missing" mass converts to energy per $E = mc^2$
  • This energy appears as kinetic energy of the products, gamma radiation, and neutrons

The most common fusion reactions:

Fusion releases roughly four times the energy per unit mass of fission and millions of times more than chemical combustion.

Conditions Required

Fusion requires extreme conditions to overcome the Coulomb barrier:

  • Temperature — $>10^7$ K for D-T (tens of millions of degrees)
  • Pressure/Density — enough particle density for sufficient collision rates
  • Confinement — the plasma must be held together long enough for reactions to occur (the Lawson Criterion)

Stars achieve this through gravitational confinement. Tho'ra technology achieves it through a variety of engineered approaches.

In the Fusion Engine Suit, both reactions work together — the Fission Core provides steady baseline power while Micro Fusion Flash Cells deliver burst energy. The suit's "naturally aspirated" firing sequence cycles through Flash Cells while the Fission Core keeps everything alive between bursts.

Beyond Fusion: Psionic Supplements

Psi Tech can supplement and enhance fusion through:

  • Psionic containment fields — replacing or augmenting magnetic confinement
  • Neural-guided reaction control — direct psionic manipulation of plasma dynamics
  • Quantum tunneling manipulation — psionically lowering the Coulomb barrier to enable fusion at reduced temperatures
